Crosswalks for Michigan Avenue

Submitted by David Shane, East Lansing Resident

My idea is…

“…very simple but important – Michigan Avenue is in desperate need of more crosswalks from Harrison Road to Homer Street… in fact there are none over that 0.8 mile stretch, but the need is especially great from Frandor to the east.  I would estimate at least a couple hundred people already just walk across the street there everyday, possibly many more, I see a few every time I catch a bus.  They walk or jog in the road, in mud, in snow, and are generally given the impression that planners don’t really think about them, at least in this part of the city.  They come from busy bus stops on both sides of the street and student (and non-student) housing on the north side that is getting even larger as Skyvue goes up.”

My idea contributes to a vibrant community by…

“Most importantly it will make crossing the street safer for pedestrians and make the environment safer for automobile drivers, but it will also help send the message that pedestrians are thought about and valued when it comes to city design in East Lansing and Lansing.”
