Painted Crosswalks Along Michigan Avenue

Submitted By Layna Anderson, Lansing Resident

My idea is…

“…painted crosswalks and/or painted streets on side streets perpendicular to Michigan Ave. Vehicles often drive down these streets at high speeds in order to connect to the next main road (north to Saginaw, south to Kalamazoo). Colorful streets would slow traffic down and make the neighborhoods safer for kids and other pedestrians. ”

My idea contributes to a vibrant community by…

“Neighbors could come together to paint the streets and/or crosswalks near their homes. There could be different themes on each street. In addition to calming traffic, the artwork would encourage visitors to the neighborhood. (“Have you seen the fish painted on N. Hayford?”) The cost of this project would depend on the number of streets/crosswalks included.”

  1. This is a great idea. I’m just curious if the paint would only last one year, because I could picture that in the winter, with plowing, salting, and potholes, that the paint would be worn off.
